Brendan Walsh · Founder, Alpha Investors

Hard science. Systematic discipline. Discretionary macro judgment.

Brendan is a former global macro hedge fund manager and institutional multi-asset team leader with more than two decades of experience building funds, portfolios and investment teams.

Alpha is the synthesis of that career: scientific thinking, rules-based systems and discretionary judgment, rebuilt into a practical process for serious self-directed investors.

The background

The career arc matters more than the job-title trail.

The pattern runs from hard-science training through quantitative risk and systematic investing into global macro hedge fund management, product design, capital raising and investment-team leadership. Alpha is the deliberate synthesis of that progression.

  1. 01
    Technical roots

    PhD in Geophysics

Brendan completed a PhD in Geophysics at the University of Edinburgh and worked in technical research and development before moving fully into financial markets.

  2. 02
    Risk, volatility and quant work

Learning the machinery of portfolio decisions

His early markets work focused on measuring risk, quantitative analysis and the systems behind portfolio construction—an unusually useful antidote to starting with stories and finding the risk later.

  3. 03
    Standard Life Investments

    Quantitative analysis and multi-asset investing

At Standard Life Investments, Brendan worked across quantitative analysis and multi-asset investing, including exposure to the Global Absolute Return Strategies process.

  4. 04
    Aviva Investors

Global macro hedge funds and £7bn+ of fund building

At Aviva Investors, Brendan managed global macro hedge funds and designed, launched and successfully raised more than £7 billion for the AIMS Target Return and Target Income funds.

  5. 05
    Franklin Templeton

    Leading the UK multi-asset team

Brendan was headhunted to lead Franklin Templeton's UK multi-asset team. He launched an innovative fund combining rules-based systematic strategies with discretionary macro, while sponsoring and advising a four-year machine-learning PhD with the University of Edinburgh.

  6. 06
    Alpha Investors

Hard science, systems and macro judgment

Alpha brings those strands together: scientific thinking, systematic discipline, discretionary macro and first-hand experience building funds and managing investment teams. It gives serious private investors a working process rather than another course or a promise of certainty.

What the experience changes

Not a signal room. Not macro theatre.

The value of institutional experience is not the logo parade. It is knowing how to combine evidence, systems, judgment and challenge—and then connect a view of the world to a portfolio.

  1. 01

    Evidence before narrative

A hard-science background starts with evidence, uncertainty and falsifiable assumptions—not a persuasive story looking for supporting charts.

  2. 02

    Systems without surrendered judgment

Rules create consistency and expose bias. Discretion matters when regimes shift, relationships break or the model is answering yesterday's question.

  3. 03

    Macro must reach the portfolio

A view on rates, inflation or oil is unfinished until it reaches themes, trade expression, position sizing, portfolio fit and review.

  4. 04

    Teams beat manufactured certainty

Good investment teams expose assumptions, challenge a view and improve the decision. They do not turn one person's confidence into a signal service.

Why build Alpha?

Keep the process. Lose the theatre.

Brendan's career was not simply spent analysing markets. It included designing and launching funds, raising billions in assets, building and managing investment teams, and translating research into portfolios that had to survive real regimes.

Alpha carries that blend forward: hard science, rules-based systematic work, discretionary macro judgment and the collective discipline of a serious investment team. The useful institutional machinery remains—a House View, research, challenge, trade expression, sizing, review and accountability—without the corporate wrapper.

That is what makes Alpha unusual in a market crowded with courses, signals and people selling certainty. It is a working investment process built to operate under uncertainty.

What Brendan does now

A weekly process, led directly.

Alpha applies Brendan's experience building and managing investment teams to a deliberately small community where the work depends on access, debate and continuity—not a personality broadcasting into a crowd.

  • 01
    Leads both weekly sessions

One call establishes the market context; the other turns it into ideas, risk and portfolio decisions.

  • 02
    Curates the medium-term House View

Macro regime, themes, portfolio sleeves, names, tactical expressions and review are connected in one framework.

  • 03
    Maintains three model portfolio frameworks

Members can see how posture, sizing, diversification and optionality fit together in practice.

  • 04
    Participates in the community directly

Members question the view, bring evidence and work through live decisions with Brendan rather than an anonymous coaching layer.

Alpha is educational and process-led. It is not personalised investment advice, a signal service or a promise of returns.
